The grape varieties

Château des Moines offers wines of notable finesse and fine balance, produced from three great varieties of grape (Merlot 72%, Cabernet Sauvignon 15%, Cabernet Franc 10% and a touch of Malbec 3%). Each variety contributes to the exceptional range of rich aromas.

The vineyard is cultivated in the traditional way with ploughing of the soil, earthing up in winter, ploughing back in the spring and controlled grassing of the inter-rows.

Leaf removal is carried out mechanically or by hand, according to the parcel of vines; separate parcel management contributes to the production of quality wines in the best tradition.

The grapes are picked at maximal ripeness; harvesting is carried out by machine, or by hand for certain parcels, with careful sorting of the grapes.

The vineyard

The present-day vineyard covers an area of 20 hectares. Its soil displays a range of components: clay or clay-silt and gravel complexes with a subsoil containing traces of iron oxide, known in the area as ‘crasse de fer’ (‘iron slag’)

Situated close to the confluence of the rivers Dordogne and Isle, the terroir benefits from a generally benign climate, ensuring just the right amount of sun, heat and moisture, the three essential factors for vine growing.
